One of the major priorities for us is to make the kindo site easy to use. As a developer, I often look at sites from a technical point of view so I would like to find out form you, the average user, whether the site is easy to use..If you have any suggestions on you to improve the user experince then please let us know.
I agree with Drew - the profile section needs work, it's not very easy or fun to use right now. I spoke to GK about this and we'll review again once the original ideas have been implemented.
so far, it is intuitive for me, but then i am used to the web!
The loading icons are a bit too unintrusive, you probably wouldn't know to look there, as is the "saved" notification. Maybe a different colour here? Google's loading/saving thing in Red works well even though it looks a bit ugly because you definitely know what it is up to.
so far great - easy to use and intuitive. i'd like to be able to enter maiden names where appropriate so that they appear in brackets in the main tree - this makes a big difference for me to easily be able to ascertain who is who. i also want to be able to move siblings around so that they appear in age order - it really annoys me when they don't (maybe i need help!) - most people i don't know dates of birth so i don't know if it changes automatically when entered but i would like to be able to shift them around without entering birthdays. My final question is what happens if someone has just spent hours entereing all my family details - will i be notified that part of the tree already exists or will this be duplicated? thanks- really enjoying it and can't wait to share.....
a small but neat improvement would be to have a dropdown for surname. eg: We can deduce that my brother will have the same surname as me. Of course the ability to over-ride should always be there.
- the "save" and "cancel" buttons are too close and similar in size. why not make the cancel button a link instead (like flickr/facebook) - it's slow to respond when you click "save". it would be good if it showed some immediate progress (e.g. spinning daisy thing) - i didn't know what a "screen name" was - i didn't put my dad's email address, and yet the "invite my father" button was still ticked -- i wondered what would happen when i click save, and whether i could do this later
yes i liked the idea of pre-filling the last name field when adding parents/sibblings especially for people with a last name like mine! (13 letters)
also when clicking on a indiviual in the tree for profile editing, the focus should go directly in the first field, that would save many mouse clicks for people with big families
@jconnor (Joe): We're working on the loading/save notification thing; the Gmail idea is something we considered but felt maybe too techy... will be improving that soon. The known issue page should be working now too.
@dklein (Dani): - Maiden names are on the way. - Moving siblings around is a bit harder to do technically, so we're going to have to look at that in more detail. We've talked about an "inner circle" type idea, where you get to move people in an out of your "inner circle", which gives them more or less focus.
- If someone adds more people to your tree, then you will be notified, yes (at least, that's in the plan) Thanks for the feedback!!
@rklein (Robin): - yes, we're planning on enabling address book integration from the major webmail providers (gmail, yahoo, hotmail for example) - we're also planning to auto-populate your fields as much as possible, but still enable you to change details where necessary
@dhoughton (Dan): - great idea regards the cancel / save button, will talk about that - spinning daisy thing needs more thinking and work ;-) - screen name is like your nickname - but clearly we need to make that more obvious ;-) - invite father - think we need to think about this as well - immediate impression is that there should be a ticked box above the email box, if you untick, then the email box disappears Great feedback, thanks!!!
I wondered if you guys behind the scenes had thought of putting born and deceased dates, e.g. 01Jan1949~02Dec2001 underneath the boxes? I think if you do, this format >>> 07Jun2001 is best, because it's unambiguous. (I'm thinking of the confusion that arises when using American and British ways of recording dates). What do you think?
@chris Yup - we have thought about adding dates to the profile boxes. I think that it might look a bit crowded having both birth and deceased dates, so maybe just birth dates, but this is definitely something that we will consider doing.
@ggamauf If you added a child incorrectly, then just delete them by hitting the (x) in the top right hand corner of the profile box
Yes dude that would be good, but they are separate pieces of software and it will require quite a lot of work to implement a feature like this. We might be able to implement this in the future, but at the moment this is not really a priority. Good idea though ;)
I just wanted to say that even though I don't have any problem with the current tree system which I find great, I still find pretty annoying to change my main email address. I changed it a while ago now but the website doesn't seems to acknowledge my new one as the main one so I still have to check the old one to get newsletter or to get my password when I forget it. Could you do something to make the change of the main email address easier please?
